M-Bag

Reimagining cabin hand-bag
Project Overview
The challenge was to achieve the maximum rationalization of the volume occupied by a hand luggage sufficient to carry personal effects for a stay of three or four days. This idea is patent pending.
My Contributions
The project was conducted by myself with the supervision of my tutor. The full time job in Alitalia provided opportunities for collecting user research data about how travellers pack and use their luggage.
M - Bag
Rhinoceros 3D, Keyshot.
While working in the baggage office for Alitalia airline in Rome Fiumicino airport, i could notice that some issues were common to all the customers i have been talking to throughout the years.

M-BAG is a possible solution to those problems occurring throughout the steps of an air travel with only one hand baggage in tow.

Considering the policies for Alitalia carrier: dimensions 55x35x25cm, Maximum 8Kg in weight, possibility of carrying an accessory (PC bag). M-BAG is made up of 4 mobile modules.

For many travellers, those are frequent issues when taking a short haul flight having only a cabin bag.

Before the trip: meticulous preparation of baggage to take advantage of all the space available

Transit at the security check: lack of agility (sorting pc, liquids, metals)

After the flight: urban mobility, needs to bring another backpack.

Pain-points

Personas

Sara, 23, Student
"Traveling exctites me, not so much packing my suitcase"

She's a leisure traveler. While packing, she takes into account the size and weight limit of the airlines. She uses both backpack and traditional trolley.

NEEDS:
• Practical containers ready to pick up
• Secret pockets for easy access to documents
PAIN POINTS:
• Compress clothing to save space

Simon, 43, Business man
"I'm always in a hurry, I fear congestion at security checks"

He travels once a week, no longer than two nights. He prefers to bring a functional backpack. He wants to pass the security check quickly.

NEEDS:
• Quick access to documents and PCs
• Maximum efficiency of the backpack
PAIN POINTS:
• Place accessories into several trays at the security check

Solution

The bag is made of four components, each of them designed to solve the pain-points.

From the left, a vacuum bag for liquids, another one for clothes and a bag-pack module. The last two are the basic module bag that contains the last element, a pc protective case.

Sketching

It wasn't easy to design a multi layer cabin bag. The main problem was to determine the correct position of the straps and the vacuum valve.

Prototyping

Self-made samples realized with thin layer plastic bags and foam

Synthetic fabrics were used to create the final prototype shown below

2500 gr

Clothe's weight necessary in a 4 day trip

Clothes are vacuumed in special bags and then stacked on the main module, thus it will be easier to remove them and go for a walk with a lighter bag.
